Who is Nkirote Mworia Njiru?
FCS. Nkirote Mworia Njiru is the UAP-Old Mutual Group Company Secretary and Legal Counsel. Nkirote is a Certified Public Secretary and lawyer with a passion for corporate governance, standard setting, policy making and capacity building. She is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, an active member of the Law Society of Kenya and a fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya where she is an elected member of the Council and is currently serving as the Vice Chairman of the Institute since May 2014.
In her sixteen years of practice, Nkirote has worked in both the public and private sectors in Kenya in several sub-sectors including telecommunications, retirement benefits and insurance in a wide-range of activities involving setting up legal and governance structures, legal and regulatory risk analysis, monitoring developments in legal research, legal policy development, legislative drafting, industry supervision and capacity building. She has also practiced law as a legal practitioner in a commercial and family law firm.
In particular, Nkirote has undertaken responsibilities relating to the strengthening of the legislative framework for financial services regulation in Kenya and the East African region, has been involved in validation work at the International Association of Insurance Supervisors level, and has also been involved in the on-going reforms of the Parastatal Sector in Kenya in the fields of corporate governance and financial sector regulation. Nkirote was part of an eight (8) member team which developed the Mwongozo code of governance for the public sector.
Nkirote holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Reading (United Kingdom), a Master of Laws in Commercial Law from the University of Cape Town (Republic of South Africa), a Global Executive Masters in Business Administration jointly offered by United States International University (Kenya) and Columbia Business School (New York, USA), a Higher National Diploma in Law (Kenya) and a Higher National Diploma in Human Resource Management (Kenya). She is also certified by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) as a trainer of trainers in Corporate Governance.
Nkirote is an avid reader. Community service, capacity building and empowerment activities are passions she fulfills through engaging in various training undertakings, trust activities and networks.
